Jhene Aiko – 3:16 AM
By George Raphael, on 08 Aug 13, 2012
Ever since i first discovered Kendrick Lamar and the whole T.D.E crew some time ago, i began to notice the name Jhene Aiko quite a bit. She is featured on quite a few of their songs, many of which have music videos. As a featured singer on the hooks of songs such as Kendrick’s “Growing Apart (to get closer)”, Ab-Soul’s “Terrorist Threats” and “Soulo Ho3″, & Shoolboy Q’s “Fantasy” and “Setbacks” she adds a uniquely soothing dynamic to the reemerging west coast rap scene. Although i haven’t heard her on anyone else’s tracks outside of Kendrick’s Top Dawg Ent. she is still a relatively new name in the game and im excited to see where she is able to take her career. I have just recently started getting into her solo work, and have been nothing but impressed. And this is all coming from someone who generally doesn’t enjoy the feminine side of R&B which normally seems superficial and forced to me. Jhene Aiko seems different though, her voice is just as beautiful as she is, and usually dealing with heavy emotion her songs are focused and meaningful. Which is the type of stuff i like to hear, and i think you will too.
This song 3:16 AM is just one example of the soulful sound Jhene produces every time she steps in that booth. And after hearing this song, it should be no wonder why Def Jam picked her up as a solo artist last year.
Her long awaited debut album Souled Out coming soon.
