After a couple of albums of Americana music (Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, National Ransom), Elvis Costello appears to be moving in a new direction with a collaborative album with the Roots.
Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson of the Roots has told Billboard magazine that the band and Costello have about 20 songs in the can of which 12 to 14 will be used for a new release.
Costello got to know the group after they backed him on three episodes of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Thompson said "It was really love at first sight. The second time he came on, we surpassed the first one. So by the third time, he was like, 'Let's stop messing around and do something together.'"
They went in the studio where "we had 13 or 14 songs, but then we said, 'Ooh! Wait a minute! Let's replace four of these songs with four better songs! And now we have the tightest 12-14 song collection out of about 20 songs that we made."
No date has been set for the release.
